Nature Based Solutions (NBS) help facing climate change supplying benefits for biodiversity conservation; they’re positive actions which bring combined advantages at a social, environmental, and economic level.
The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) defines Nature-Based Solutions as “actions to protect, sustainably manage, and restore natural or modified ecosystems, that address societal challenges effectively and adaptively, simultaneously providing human well-being and biodiversity benefits”.
The role of natural ecosystems in absorbing CO2 emissions and in helping countries adapt to climate change was widely recognized during COP21 and in the framework of the Paris Climate Agreement adopted in 2015.
The agreement reflects the willingness of the international community to mobilise all sectors and stakeholders in order to limit the increase of global average temperature below 1.5 ° C. The Paris agreement also stresses the importance of ensuring the integrity of all ecosystems and the protection of biodiversity when taking action to tackle climate change.
Nature-Based Solutions are also a fundamental part of the strategy required to tackle climate change by businesses. They constitute a sustainable alternative and a valid long-term economic opportunity.
Adequate investment in NBS will help reducing financial impacts of climate change and contributing to the creation of new jobs, the resilience of livelihoods and reduction of poverty. By investing in this type of project, the private sector can transform environmental, social and economic challenges into opportunities for innovation.
These projects are estimated to have enough potential to provide over a third of the climate mitigation required within 2030. By protecting ecosystems, we reduce the risks and impacts of climate change: natural habitats in a good state of conservation contribute to both mitigation and adaptation to climate change.

REDD + (Reduction of emissions from deforestation and forest degradation) regulates countries' efforts to reduce emissions from deforestation and forest degradation and to promote conservation, sustainable forest management and improvement of forest carbon stocks.
Deforestation and forest degradation are the second leading cause of global warming, responsible for around 15% of global greenhouse gas emissions, which makes the loss and depletion of forests a major issue for climate change.
In addition to the large contribution of deforestation and forest degradation to global emissions, the fight against both these phenomena has been identified as one of the most convenient ways to reduce emissions.
In addition to mitigating climate change, tackling deforestation and forest degradation and supporting sustainable management helps conserving water resources and prevents floods, controls soil erosion, reduces sediment deposition on rivers, protects fishing and investments in hydroelectric plants, it also preserves biodiversity, local cultures and traditions.
With the implementation of REDD +, developing countries make a tangible contribution to the conservation of their national biodiversity and to the global fight against climate change. In addition to environmental benefits, REDD + projects also offers social and economic advantages, in line with the Sustainable Development Goals.Discover our REDD++ project
