Cooperation opportunities for business
Carbonsink is proud to be among the profit entities admitted to the “Procedura aperta per la selezione di iniziative imprenditoriali innovative da realizzare nei paesi partner di cooperazione per il perseguimento degli obiettivi di sviluppo sostenibile”.
The announcement of the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS), the institution born with the reform of the law dedicated to cooperation (125/2014) which started operating in January 2016 with the ambition to align Italy with the main partners European and international commitment to development, underlines how the Italian entrepreneurial reality can become "an engine for inclusive growth".
The procedure will support innovative projects presented by the private sector which aim to achieve the SDGs in the cooperation partner countries.
Climate finance for urban development and energy efficiency in Mozambique
The business idea presented by Carbonsink, in collaboration with AVSI (Italian NGO), reflects the values and the company mission of Carbonsink, and has the main objective of increasing the spread of efficient cooking technologies in the urban area of Maputo (Mozambique) through the mechanism of Climate Finance and the sale of carbon credits.
Carbonsink has chosen to participate in the selection process in the "Idee Mature" selection, that is reserved for all those entrepreneurial initiatives already experimented in one or more cooperation partner countries for which further developments are planned. The project presented by Carbonsink was in fact launched in 2015 as the first pilot program for urban development and energy efficiency, aimed at climate mitigation using efficient stoves for cooking, and financed through Climate Finance.
The innovative idea of Carbonsink represents a scale up of the pilot phase, unlike what was done in the first phase of the project, the target this time is to use efficient cooking technologies produced directly locally, to reduce production costs and promoting the creation of a sustainable market and self-entrepreneurship.
With climate finance we mean all those funds destined to the development of projects and programs for mitigation and adaptation to climate change. These include specific support mechanisms such as carbon credits and financial aid for mitigation and adaptation activities to encourage the transition to "climate neutrality".
The climate finance allows a sustainable development in the long term, it also guarantees the certification of the project, in fact this has been entrusted to one of the main and most recognized international standards - CDM of the United Nations to allow the sale of carbon credits on the regulated market.
Sustainable Development Goals and local benefits
74% of the population of Maputo still uses inefficient cooking systems fed with vegetable carbon, the high demand is one of the main causes of deforestation in the country and is the main reason for the huge amount of greenhouse gas emissions.
In addition to the reduction of GHG emissions into the atmosphere, which reflects the number 13 of the Sustainable Development Goals of the 2030 Agenda and invites to take targeted and concrete actions to combat climate change, the project developed by Carbonsink will contribute, as in all climate change mitigation projects developed to produce benefits for the local population.
The project provides access to modern energy services, contributing to a reduction in fuel consumption; I promote universal well-being by consistently decreasing exposure to smoking, atmospheric pollution, the risk of respiratory diseases and injuries.
Furthermore, the reduction in firewood collection and the time spent cooking will allow families to dedicate themselves to other important activities such as children's education and income generation activities leading to a reduction in poverty Maputo.
The incentive for local production has allowed economic growth and new opportunities for decent work for the population; a local quality production is undoubtedly one of the fundamental prerequisites for the scalability of the project.
But raising awareness on environmental issues related to climate change and learning about new and innovative tools that respond to the challenges of sustainable development can establish a long-term sustainable business model in the private sector.
