Carbonsink at the initial conference of the SeaForest LIFE project
Carbonsink is proud to take part in the initial conference of the SeaForest LIFE project, scheduled for September 30, in Rome at the Higher Institute for Environmental Protection and Research.
The event will focus on the aims and objectives of the project, illustrating the potential of the Posidonia families within Italian protected areas belonging to the Natura 2000 Network. These environments are in fact an opportunity for the environment and the community and good practices for their proper management will be discussed and shared.
The project to safeguard the Posidonia oceanica meadows, approved and financed by the European Community, was developed by D.R.E.Am. Italy, the company that deals with sustainable rural development, environmental protection and land requalification.
The project will contribute to the EU's policy on greenhouse gas emission standards resulting from activities related to land use, and especially to the framework strategy on the marine strategy and the general action program for the Union's environment European, "LIFE Climate Change Mitigation".
Posidonia oceanica is indeed a key element for the conservation of the Mediterranean Sea ecosystems, the Posidonia meadows represent an important ecosystem both from the point of view of biodiversity, as they act as nurseries for many species of fish, crustaceans, molluscs, plants and other living beings, but above all play a primary role as producers of oxygen and as a deposit of carbon, storing about 50% of the carbon buried in marine sediments, or twice as much as terrestrial forests.
Climate Finance and carbon credits for sustainable development
The role of Carbonsink within SEAFOREST LIFE, in particular, will be to deal with the creation of a market for carbon credits generated thanks to the project and its activities.
The main goal of Carbonsink is to support and support the design of a long-term climate change mitigation strategy, able to achieve sustainability objectives through innovative solutions. The mechanism of Climate Finance is essential today to encourage the transition to the so-called Climate Neutrality and towards sustainable development.
The protection and conservation of these ecosystems represents a valid strategy for achieving the objectives of mitigating climate change, established with the Paris Agreement.
SEAFOREST LIFE was created in collaboration with numerous partners including Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche - Istituto per l'Ambiente Marino Costiero - Unità Operativa Oristano, Istituto Superiore per la Protezione e la Ricerca Ambientale, Paragon Limited, l'Ente Parco nazionale dell'Arcipelago di La Maddalena, Ente Parco Nazionale dell'Asinara, WATER RIGHT AND ENERGY FOUNDATION, Ente Parco Nazionale del Cilento, l'Università della Tuscia con il Dipartimento per l' Innovazione nei sistemi biologici, agroalimentari e forestali (DIBAF).
